If you need a refresher on any of that, feel free to check out the earlier chapters in this guide. Additionally, you should attempt to establish your starter base close to a source of water, such as a river or stream. Not only will this make it easier to quench your thirst and combat extreme heat, it will prove invaluable when it comes to cooking and farming. Depending on the type of server you join, you might quickly discover that much of the island has already been claimed by other tribes, making it tough to set up a base of your own.
Often, tribes will reserve land to prevent others from building nearby, usually by placing down foundations or pillars. When it comes to base building, you can be as practical, or as fanciful, as you please. Currently, there are four tiers of building materials in ARK: Thatch, Wood, Stone and Metal, and each affords greater protection than the last. A thatch wall, for instance, offers 1, damage resistance, while its wood, stone and metal counterparts have 10, In practical terms, almost anything can destroy a thatch structure, while wooden structures are sturdy enough to keep out most mid-sized creatures.
Stone structures can withstand attack from everything but alpha predators the glowing, super-tough raptor and T. Finally, metal structures are impervious to everything but explosives.
Things are slightly different on PvE servers, of course, where only wildlife can damage your base. The earliest available building Engrams come from the Thatch tier of structures, with the Thatch Foundation and Doorframe unlocking at Level 2, and the Thatch Door, Walls and Ceiling unlocking at Level 3.
Resource Map (The Island)
You can snap up to four wall pieces to each foundation or three walls, a doorframe and a door, if you preferand a roof piece then rests on your walls. Roof pieces will function as floors if you decide to build further levels above, and these in turn will support more walls.
Additionally, should you be unhappy with an item once it has been placed in the world, you can demolish it to recoup half of its original resource cost. A tip I got and like is use just stone, build it big. Think layers, like an onion, think maze like old DOOM games. Idea is to make it too costly to keep demo'ing doors walls to find your "safety room" oh yea, make a metal safety room inside you base.
Try and hide the metal walls as best you can. Not really from experience as my base as is hasn't been raided yet. Pixel View Profile View Posts. I've seen some people turn their base into a huge maze with lots of doors and walls to confuse potential raiders, and it also makes them waste more resources attempting to raid you.
In many of those corridors you could place alarm traps, narco traps, or even an explosive one if you knew you would never go through a certain area. Also, don't leave ladders to the tops of your roofs up unless you are using them. Use trap doors to get to the 2nd floor instead of ramps, put tons of dilos, dimo's or other small carno's in various rooms as traps :D And btw spikes can be taken out by air with a few grenades easy, but aren't a bad deterrent at least.
When placing turrets make sure there are no blind spots at all, and encase all generators inside buildings with an extra metal walll around it as well. Don't put your turrets in areas they can easy be hit with pikes, or grenades either.
Put them on pillars, dino door frames, or out of the way and hard to get to locations. Hope that helps some.Defensive walls are walls placed around--rather than on top--of your base's foundation. They are built using a variety of materials and may be comprised of Thatch, Wood, Stone, Metal, or Tek. One way to make the walls stronger is to make boxes on the ground before-hand--this will allow builders to make the walls wider.
Also, it's a good idea to put a roof on the top as a walkway. On the outer side of the wall, place windows in order to have firing holes to defend you territory; Furthermore, along with a supply of Tranquilizer Arrowsa player may hunt from their fort. Catwalks and ladders are critical components to any defensive measures.
By linking them to other buildings, characters can more easily access different sections of your base. The best way to make these is to build them into walls. Make a square three wall tall tower with wood wall foundations. On the fourth wall put in a doorway opening. The top of the tower is a trap door floor with a ladder going through the middle. To make the tower top put in four windowed walls and add a roof. You can even put a storage box up there with arrows or guns to make a sniper nest.
At this phase a simple thatch hut will do, preferably with a campfire and near food and water sources. Preferably a medium sized house against a tall cliff with a double layered wall to keep the carnivores and larger dinosaurs out. If possible, also have some farms to have a backup on food if meat is scarce.
Always a large house and surrounding lands. Make sure you have enough space for your tribe members to house their food, dinosaurs, and materials. Fandom may earn an affiliate commission on sales made from links on this page. Sign In Don't have an account? Start a Wiki.

Try Now.The Hidden Lake sometimes called Hidden Valleyor Crater Lakeor The Oasis is a location in the northeast of the Island that consists of a clearing with a small lake, surrounded by very dense forest and boulders. It is a relatively safe location in the otherwise dangerous north part of the Island, although Castoroides can prove hazardous.
There are three paths to enter on foot on which you can fit barely a Triceratops without removing some boulders or trees.
With the trees and stones removed, even Brontosaurus can enter and exit the valley. One entrance leads south, while the others lead north and northeast. This area is a great location for a mid-level base as there are very few carnivores and many resources.
Giant Beaver Dams provide easy access to wood and the lake's proximity to Far's Peak provides a good source of metal and crystal. The Hidden Lake is located in the region Smugglers Pass. There are lots of trees and rocks for resources and is hidden by the thick surrounding forest.
To the north is a small peninsula with scattered trees, and across the ocean to the east is The Dead Island. The actual covered pens are used for hatching eggs, keeps all the babies together while I figure out which ones I want to keep.
Wow that looks amazing! Thanks for the response! Elgar View Profile View Posts. Hi, check the videos by Aaron Longstaff on Youtube. Amazing ARK builder, with step-by-step tutorials. All his fantastic builds are totally vanilla, no mods required. He's definitely really great at building! Not really sure how to post the pics but here is an older Vanilla design of mine. Breeding pens in the middle, left and right are stables with room for a utility room in the middle if you need it. Also plent of space to add a green house on top or to the sides.
That looks really great! I think from the responses I've gotten I can make a really good breeding base! Thanks guys! I'll let you know what it looks like when I've finished.
